More About Chai Elul
"Chai Elul" — the 18th day of the Hebrew month of Elul — is a most significant date on the Chassidic calendar. The founder of Chassidism, Rabbi Israel Baal Shem Tov, was born on this date, in 1698. It is also the day, 36 years later, on which the Baal Shem Tov began to publicly disseminate his teachings.
Elul 18 is also the birthday — in 1745 — of Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi, who often referred to himself as the Baal Shem Tov's "spiritual grandson" (Rabbi Schneur Zalman was the disciple of Rabbi Israel's disciple, Rabbi DovBer of Mezeritch).
Rabbi Tuvia Teldon first moved to Long Island in 1977 after receiving his Rabbinical Ordination from the Central Lubavitch Yeshiva in Brooklyn. As Executive Director of Chabad Lubavitch of Long Island since then, he has been instrumental in the growth of Lubavitch on Long Island and the 36 Chabad Centers around Nassau and Suffolk. He now oversees the activities of 50 Rabbis in the largest Jewish educational network on Long Island. Rabbi Teldon is the host of the weekly Cablevision talk show ‘The Jewish Spotlight’, which airs throughout the Long Island area, and features local and regional guests to discuss a wide variety of topics.
As the senior Rabbi on the Island, and one of the first Chabad representatives in the NYC Metro area, he is considered to have a thorough knowledge of the heartbeat of the overall Jewish community on religious, domestic, and Middle East issues, as well as matters pertaining to Chabad and Jewish spirituality. He authored “Eight Paths of Purpose” in 2022 and “Your Unique Purpose” in 2025 and lectures extensively on topics relating to purpose, happiness and overcoming life’s obstacles. He and his wife Chaya live in Commack and have five children and a growing family of grandchildren.
